Indirectly, you could tell that it is because of Francis Ford Coppola that my path took the direction of Palermo.Once on site, I discovered so much more than the first films of the Godfather trilogy beautiful harsh Sicilian landscapes. The Mediterranean's geographical position attracted numerous invaders from the Greeks, Romans, Muslim houses of Arago, Anjou, and even Napoleon. Still, the most interesting part of their cultural heritage is left by the Normand’s - ruling the île from 1050 to ca 1200.
History describe this conqueror as an obscure Baron Tancrede de Hauteville - himself with grands fathers as Viking invaders establishing themselves on the Normandy cost line around 900. The Hauteville family's cultural heritage is stunning due to its exceptional quality and craftsmanship. For 150 years, during three generations of their rule, people of all religions and cultures lived and thrived in peace.
A humanist approach (while the rest of Europe was so busy with crusades), UNESCO World Heritage gave a name to this phenomenon, unique in European middle Ages history : Normani Architecture
(Which I did documented with lots of pictures )
Yes, of course, this late Mediterranean travel is giving me inspiration to put down my impressions on Arches paper or on cardboards.
Anyhow
Somehow … I am still processing what I discovered during 10 days in Palermo and its surroundings.
Probably, I will only be able to transmit an abstract feeling about this very interesting part of Italy.
Welcome to the vernissage.
Finissage Sunday March 23, 12-17
